“I’ve always been fascinated by the Limerick Soviet, not by its failures or successes but by the energy and spirit in which it unfolded. Struggle, defiance, audacity and comradery demonstrated by ordinary citizens, united by a fierce civic pride. I still see that civic pride today in the people of Limerick, maybe that pride got passed on, this print serves as a reminder to be as brave and audacious as those Limerick citizens that came before us” - Eoin

On a fresh Easter morning hundreds of men and women boarded a train for Limerick railway station. Upon arrival they were met by armed British forces, identifying a weak point, hundreds of protesters rushed past a lone troop who was quickly brushed aside, they were free and the onlooking crowd erupted in cheers! The protesters had attended a gaelic football match the night before and upon their return they had been refused entry to the city via Sarfields bridge. The workers needed to have a military pass to gain access to their own city. The protesters spent the night in Thomond gate where some attended an all night Céilí and in the morning were fed and watered by farmers from Clare. Following this they boarded a train to Limerick, ready to enter their city by any means necessary.

Thank you to Limerick City Library and Liam Cahill whose work on the Limerick Soviet helped and inspired me to create this print.
